Tips For Saving Money At The Pharmacy

03-May-2008: Prescription drugs and health care needs can be a costly expense, especially for older people and those who are chronically ill. However, there are easy ways consumers can save money on health care needs--especially at the pharmacy.

Greg Collins of CVS/pharmacy provides tips about ways to cut costs at your local pharmacy.

Is there a way to save money on my prescription medications?

Ask your pharmacist if there is a lower-cost option for your medication. Many popular medications have lower-cost generic alternatives available. Confirm that you are not taking unnecessary medications by bringing all of your prescriptions to your pharmacist for a consultation. Talk to your doctor before making any changes in your medication.

What is the difference between brand-name medications and generics?

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) puts each generic medication through a rigorous quality review process to ensure it is as safe and effective as the brand-name medication. A generic drug is made of the same chemicals as the brand-name, and while the shape and color of the generic may look different, it is the same. Generics usually cost much less than brand-name medications. Additionally, lower-cost generics are available for over-the-counter medications. An example is acetaminophen instead of Tylenol.

How can I adjust my Medicare Part D plan to save money and get better coverage?

By enrolling in a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan you are ahead of the game, and have peace of mind should your prescription drug costs rise. However, your plan should be reviewed during each annual enrollment period from November 15−December 31. Each year, plan premiums, deductibles, prescription co-payments, and out-of-pocket expenses may change. These costs, as well as the list of covered drugs, vary in each plan and region.

Do pharmacies offer coupons to customers?

Most pharmacies make coupons available in weekly store circulars or within inserts inside the newspaper. For example, CVS/pharmacy offers the "ExtraCare" program of unique savings opportunities and instant rewards. Cardholders receive 2 percent back for every dollar spent and one dollar back for every two prescriptions filled in the form of "Extra Bucks." These can be used to purchase almost any non-prescription item at the pharmacy including cosmetics, over-the-counter medications, food and more.
