Oglethorpe Pharmacy going out of business after 36 years
06-Feb-2008: The owner of Oglethorpe Pharmacy in Crawford has sold its prescription records and medicine stock to Fred's discount retail store and pharmacy in nearby Lexington and will close the 36-year-old business.
Owner Ken Roling, a pharmacist, plans to work part-time in the pharmacy at the Fred's.
Roling closed Oglethorpe Pharmacy on Wednesday, but is keeping the store open until after a closeout sale, he said.
Roling has worked at Oglethorpe Pharmacy since 1978, and he bought the business in 1994. Three years ago, he set a goal partially to retire by the time he reached the age of 62, Roling said. He turned 61 in January.
The chance to cut back his weekly hours helped Roling decide to sell, but he also was influenced by the rising cost of medication and shrinking insurance reimbursements, he said.
Oglethorpe Pharmacy employed three other people. One worker is retiring, and the full-time pharmacy technician is moving to Fred's with Roling, who will work three days a week there. The other position was a part-time job, Roling said.
Fred's, a national chain, opened its Lexington store and pharmacy a year ago.
The small commercial shopping center where Oglethorpe Pharmacy is located will be vacant once the business closes its doors.
