Automated pharmacy will add research lab
12-Mar-2008: Local and state officials joined dignitaries from Medco Health Solutions to break ground on its new 318,000-square-foot, $140 million automated pharmacy Tuesday, but corporate officials say they expect even more groundbreaking to occur with a new research lab that also will be at the site.
The Personalized Medicine Research Center will work with data compiled by seven therapeutic research labs across the country.
Medco researchers hope to partner with the Indiana University School of Medicine and other schools to study patient genetic testing and clinical drug data in hopes of creating more personalized drug programs.
Chief Medical Officer Robert Epstein estimated 7 to 8 percent of patients are getting too much or too little of their prescribed drugs without knowing it and had high hopes the research performed at the facility would help rectify that.
"Our goal is to get the right dosage of the right drug to the right patient at the right time," he said.
Neither Epstein nor General Manager Richard Jones could say how much would be invested in the research facility or how many researchers would be there, saying they were still in the initial stages of planning.
The automated pharmacy, which will span the size of six-and-a-half football fields, is scheduled to open in 2009 in the AllPoints at Anson development off I-65 in Boone County.
The facility is expected to employ 1,300 people by 2012, with an average wage of $53,000.
